The Love Guru - Review
I have always enjoyed Mike Myers’ humor. He may not be a huge talent, but with each character he plays, he brings an indefinable something. His recurring characters on Saturday Night Live were great, especially Linda Richman. The big screen gave us Austin Powers in three installments. Now there’s The Love Guru. I saw the movie last night and I loved it.
Mike Myers is Guru Pitka, whose life goal is to knock Deepak Chopra out of the #1 Guru spot by appearing on Oprah. He is accompanied everywhere by his sidekick Rajneesh, and rides an elephant named Bodhisatva. Pitka greets everyone with the words “Mariska Hargitay”, his hands folded and his head bowed. He hosts discourses on his self-help philosophies, which are trademarked acronyms. He learned his craft as a young boy, alongside Deepak Chopra, from his teacher and now mentor, Guru Tugginmypudda. Guru Pitka is hired by Jane Bullard to help a star hockey player refocus on the game after he loses his wife to a more “gifted” rival. The storyline is rather lame, but the zinging one-liners, a strong supporting cast and the Bollywood-esqe song and dance routines make this movie worth watching.
Myers’ movies are known for cameo appearances, and this one is no exception. Jessica Simpson, Val Kilmer, Deepak Chopra, Kanye West and yes, Mariska Hargitay get some face time. The movie is supported by some well-known names: Steve Colbert, Jim Gaffigan, Jessica Alba, Verne Troyer, Justin Timberlake and Ben Kingsley. Yes, that’s what I said, Ben Kingley, as Guru Tugginmypudda. You have to admire an Oscar Winner who brings his level of talent down to nailing an Indian accent while being crosseyed and peeing into a clay pot, all at the same time. Marco Schnabel makes his directing debut with The Love Guru, after being Assistant Director to Jay Roach on flicks like Meet the Parents, Meet the Fokkers and Austin Powers Goldmember.
The movie has received bad reviews from the critics. It has also caused many Hindus to get their dhotis in a bunch. This is why you need to go see the movie, so you can judge for yourself what the hoopla is all about. If you ask me, it was worth paying full price.
